Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does my $25 registration include?
- Your registration fee includes the welcome event at Hazlitts 1852 Vineyards on Thursday evening, wine tasting at seven wineries (including Hazlitts and Silver Springs), a commemorative 5th anniversary Grapehounds wine glass, a Grapehound Wine Tour-New York car magnet, and a packet with some assorted maps, guides and other goodies.
Registration at the event is
$30.
2. Where does the money go?
100% of our ticket sales and silent auction proceeds – after expenses -- go to regional greyhound adoption groups to find homes for ex-racing greyhounds. We post the recipients on our website.
3. Will we receive tickets in the mail?
The Grapehound Wine Tour stays green and saves money for greyhounds by mailing nothing via the USPS (snail mail).
Email confirmation Within a week of receiving your registration and payment, you will receive an
email confirmation that you are registered.
E-packet A week to ten days before the event you will receive an
e-packet of information in an email to the email address you provided at registration. This will list participating wineries, local veterinarians, and other information.
Check-In When you check in at the event you will receive your wine glass and a packet of goodies.
4. What if I do not drink wine?
Please come shop the vendors for free and hang out with your friends on Friday and Saturday!
5. Are the vendors there all weekend?
Vending is scheduled for all day Friday and all day Saturday, July 30-31. We have booked some large vendor tents like the old days at Dewey Beach so that you can shop our vendors rain or shine. See a complete list of vendors at
Vendors.
6. What else is there to do at the event besides wine tasting?
For those who are pre-registered, you are invited to a welcome at Hazlitts 1852 Vineyard on Thursday evening, where food and various alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available.
We have vendors from about a dozen states all day Friday and Saturday selling all sorts of greyhound accessories and other products and services. On Friday we have a concert on Friday evening from 5-8 PM under the stars for hounds and owners. Bring a blanket or your lawn chairs. We have a great food vendor all weekend serving some great lunch and dinner items. No need to go to a fancy restaurant.
On Saturday we have an ice cream social at 4PM, a Blessing of the Hounds at 4:30PM, and at 5PM the Silent Auction winners are declared.
On Sunday we walk to the beautiful Taughannock Falls on Sunday afternoon at 12:30PM. (It’s later this year due to another event.)
7. May I bring children?
What is the charge for children?
While this is an event targeted for adults, parents may bring children for no additional charge. Parents need to understand that this is an adult event and they will need to take responsibility for entertaining and monitoring their children throughout the weekend.
8. My mother does not drink. Is there a charge for her to attend?
Anyone may attend for free and shop the vendors on Friday or Saturday. Only registered guests are invited to the Welcome event at Hazlitts 1852 Vineyards and receive a wine glass, wine passes and goody bags.
9. What wineries will accept our wine tasting passes?
Featured Wineries We will post a list of all featured wineries which accept our wine passes. We expect about ten to twelve wineries and Finger Lakes Distilling to be our featured tasting venues because 1) they allow our greyhounds to visit with you and 2) they accept our wine passes for "free" tasting.
Participating Wineries Other wineries will be participating but not featured wineries. This means that your greyhounds may accompany you to the winery but there may be and additional fee to taste.
Some wineries do not allow greyhounds to be with you when you taste.
We recommend that you do not patronize wineries that do not welcome greyhounds, as that gives them no incentive to work with us or change their policies to allow our greyhounds.
10. What hotels are available?
www.grapehounds.com lists available hotels.
Please understand that vineyards don't grow in
cities, and Holiday Inns don't grow in vineyards.
The hotels in Ithaca are about 20 miles away from our wineries but welcome as many greyhounds as you can pack into the minivan without any pet fees. They are very accommodating. The hotels in Watkins Glen may have more restrictive rules about dogs, but all the ones we list accept greyhounds. Call them to ask details.
There are many options, from Bed and Breakfasts and luxury hotels to inexpensive cabins and campgrounds in the area. Book early, as accommodations start to fill up by late June.
Come up a few days early and explore the region!
11. Is there a walk to Taughannock Falls this year? (pronounced Taw-gan-ick)
Yes, just a little later on Sunday than usual. Normally we walk about 9AM. This year there is a triathalon taking place at Taughannock Falls State Park that morning, so our walk to Taughannock Falls will gather up about 12:30PM for our traditional walk to the Falls.
As always, Balance Photography will be on hand to take portraits of visitors at the Falls with their favorite hounds. They will also be scheduling portraits all weekend from their vendor booth at Silver Springs Winery.
12. What other attractions are there in the area?
Some of the sights you may wish to check out include
* Various waterfalls, such as Buttermilk Falls near Ithaca and the gorge
trail at Watkins Glen State Park (dogs are not allowed on the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen)
* Cornell University
* Museum of the Earth just north of Ithaca on Rt 96
* Corning Museum of glass in Corning, New York
* The race track at Watkins Glen
* The Ithaca Farmers Market
